I'm going to try something in 2022 — and that is to take a picture every day to commemorate the day (and thus, the week, the month, the year). And, sure, it's only been two days so far — but we have a theme going already, Reader-friends. And that theme is: Brr.
I'm not complaining. Really. I'm not new to Minnesota, and I'm not even really that new to Bemidji. I've lived here before. And before I lived here, I lived even further "up north" in Thief River Falls. So -34 degree temps are not especially shocking.
In fact, when I went out to start my car yesterday morning just to make sure it WOULD start — at -28 below — here's what I said when I came back in the house: "You know, it's not even that bad out there. You wear the right coat and it feels like a nice 0 degrees."
"A nice 0 degrees." That's what living in Minnesota practically my whole life has done to me.
And, let's be honest, when it comes to existing in these extreme temps, there's a fair bit of street cred that comes with them, right?
Doesn't mean I love 'em.
And let's be real here: Even my hardcore, born-and-bred Minnesota husband — who ALWAYS aims to go ice fishing to celebrate his January 2 birthday — opted to stay home today. Instead of ice fishing. On his birthday.
Because no one likes dragging a sled across a lake in -21 degree temps solo. And I love the guy, but I wasn't about to volunteer to join him.
Anyway. About those first two 2022 pics. They pretty well encapsulate my last two days ...

Look! It's the 11 p.m. "running of the car" in the driveway. It's like the running of the bulls, but not at all.
Don't let that blue sky deceive you. Those are some heavy-duty ice crystals growing on our house.
